DETAILED ENGINEERING REPORT
1.INTRODUCTION
Kaduthuruthy, Kallara and Kuravilangadu panchayath are situated
in Vaikom and Meenachil taluk in Kottayam district. The total population of
these panchayaths 84840 and having households 16968 nos. Due to the absence of perennial sources of water in this locality like rivers, lakes, or large
ponds for catering the needs of people, they depend on open wells for water
.This Project is aimed for providing FHTC to the entire area of Kaduhuruthy,
Kallara and Kuravilangad Panchayath, Kottayam District of Kerala State.
Since this place has an undulating terrain, water scarcity is usual in every
summer season on the elevated places. Considering all these facts a comprehensive rural water supply scheme namely ‘ARWSS toVeliyannoor and adjoining villages’ was conceived in late nineties for catering the demand of
nearby villages also.
. 2. BRIEF HISTORY OF SCHEME
The scheme area is located in the northern portion of Kottayam District.
Acute scarcity of drinking water is being experienced in the scheme area. So a
piped water supply system for providing safe and potable water to the public
is proposed for a group of villages laying in the northern boundary of
Kottayam District. There are four schemes combined together with separate
entities and having a common source.,viz,
4
1. ARWSS to Veliyannoor and adjoining villages phase I :
For Mulakkulam and Velloor villages.
2. ARWSS to Veliyannoor and adjoining villages phase II :
For Njeezhoor and Kuravilangadu villages.
3. ARWSS to Veliyannoor and adjoining villages phase III :
For Uzhavoor and Veliyannoor villages.
4. ARWSS to Kallara village : For Kallara village.
The Muvattupuzha River is flowing in the northern boundary of
Kottayam district. This river is perennial for the reason that the tail race water
from Idukki hydro- electric project discharges to this river. Muvattupuzha
River is proposed as the common source for the 4 schemes with a single intake is at Changalappalam near Mevelloor in Velloor Panchayat. A 45 MLD
Water treatment plant is constructed and commissioned at Mevelloor. A fullfledged water treatment process consisting Aeration, Coagulation, Flocculation, Sedimentation, Filtration and Disinfection by chlorination is adopted in
the Plant.
The scheme ARWSS to Veliyannoor and adjoining villages - Phase I
and Phase II and Phase III and ARWSS to Kallara has already were completed., except the works in Kuravilangad village. The existing system consist of
intake arrangements, Water Treatment Plant, Electrical Installations, Pump
sets and Pumping/ Gravity mains and Storage/Service Reservoirs. There are
5
17 nos OHSR/GLSR in the net work system of which 14 were already completed and commissioned. The remaining 3 nos. GLSR/OHSR was intended
for Kuravilangadu Village.

4.GENERAL DETAILS OF PANCHAYATH
Kuravilangadu
Kuravilangadu village is located in Kottayam district of Kerala. This village is situated in Meenachil Taluk, about 20 kilometers north of Kottayam and
close to the town Ettumannoor and places like Kalathoor, Kalikavu, Vempally,
Uzhavoor, Marangattupalli, Vakkadu, Elakkadu and Kanjirathanam. The M.C.
Road passes through the middle of this village in north south direction.
The majority of the people residing in the area is the followers of Christianity. Kuravilangadu is known as the “Vatikkan of India” and also “Kizhakkinte Lourde” . The church of Kuravilangadu was constructed in the third century, nearly a century before Constatine declared Christianity as the official religion in the Roman Empire. The land is blessed by the esteemed presence of
St.Mary’s Forane Church, which was built in 105 AD. According to believers,
Mother Mary’s first appearance in the world, was in Kuravilangad.
Even though this place has certain prominence in history, the facilities
like water supply and tourism are not yet attained any significant concern all
these years. The area is undulating with hills and valleys. The main agricultural crop is rubber and food grains.
The literacy level is 99.12%. The major educational institutions are of
paramedical education. There is no important industrial establishment in the
village. People mainly depended on small business and agricultural activities to
carry out their day to day life. Due to the absence of perennial sources of water
in the locality like rivers, lakes, or large ponds for catering the needs of people,
they depend on open wells for water. Since this place has an undulating terrain
water scarcity is usual in every summer season on the elevated places. Considering all these facts a comprehensive rural water supply scheme namely ‘ARWSS
to Veliyannoor and adjoining villages’ was conceived in late nineties for catering the demand of nearby villages also. Currently there is no scheme for water

5.PRESENT PROPOSAL
In this backdrop Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) has been launched which aims
at providing functional house hold tap connection to every rural household by
2024. The programme focuses as service delivery at household level i.e., water
supply on regular basis in adequate quality and prescribed quality. Due to in-
11
creasing the demand of treated water supply in these four panchayath, JJM project aiming for giving 8627 no of household connections in Kaduhuruthy,
Kallara and Kuravilangad Panchayath by augmenting the scheme which is beneficial to the existing consumers.
Already functioning OHSR at Jathikkamala is unable to meet the
current requirement of all the 6 panchayaths. For supplying Kaduthuruthy,
Kallara ,Kuravilangad, Njeezhoor, Mulakkulam & part of Velloor Panchayath
15 MLDs of water required. But at present scenario design can be only utilised
for 6.5 MLD, which is about 8.5 MLD less than the actual requirement. This
leads to lack of supply of water in western part of Kallara Panchayath like
Mundar (upper Kuttanad) area and elevated places like Arunoottimangalam,
Myladumpara etc. And a RKI new scheme for Kuravilangad Panchayath has
been ongoing stage, which requires 3 MLDs of water. Hence submitting herewith the proposal for separation of Kaduthuruthy, Kallara and Kuravilangad
Panchayath from the existing Jhathikkamala OHSR. At present in Kaduthuruthy
,Kallara water supply is scheduled only twice in a week .And there is a frequent
pipe leakage issue in gravity main from Jathikkamala to Kaduthuruthy Rajan
kavala Arnoottimangalam PWD road. And this also affects the regular water
supply in these panchayaths. The present proposal aiming new pump house,
pump & motor ,clear water channel ,2 nos of OHSR , 400mm DI pumping
main, 400mm DI , 250mm DI & 200 mm DI gravity main, extension of pipelines to non covered wards and also for providing house hold connections to all
12
houses wherever possible. By executing this project already existing consumers
in these panchayaths also benefitted and it will be a solution for above mentioned issues.
Hence the new proposal is aiming for giving supply at Kaduthuruthy,
Kallara, and Kuravilangad Panchayath comprising of following components
1. Pumping Main from Plant to Arunoottimangalam 400mm DI pipe
2. Gravity Main from Arunoottimangalam to Alari 400mm DI pipe
3. Gravity Main from Alari to Kaduthuruthy 350mm DI pipe
4. Gravity Main from Kaduthuruthy to Kallara 200mm DI pipe
5. Construction of 7 LL OHSR at Aranoottimangalam
6. Pump & Motor at Pump House
7. Pump House ,Clear water channel,Power Allocation etc.
8. Kallara Panchayath Distribution Line
9. Kaduthuruthy Panchayath Distribution Line
10. Kuravilangad Panchayath Distribution Line
11. Construction of 10LL OHSR at Sidhandhikkunnu
12. Providing Water Connection at Kaduthuruthy Panchayath- 5291NoS.
13. Providing Water Connection at Kallara Panchayath- 1169Nos.
14. Expansion of Distribution Line and providing Water Connection after RKI
Work of Kuravilangad Panchayath -2167 Nos.

inhabitants in the Kaduthuruthy panchayath. The population in this area comes
around 25000 Nos. 10% of leakage provision is considered and 10% of domestic demand is added to meet institutional, industrial, and fire fighting demands.
Thus the ultimate water demand comes to 3 MLD. 1/3rd storage of the same is
taken for design of Tank capacity. Hence 10LL Capacity OHSR is proposed. |
